This assignment used a combination of trend forecasting along with sustainability to create a custom carpet design, partnering with Mohawk Flooring. We created this trend forecast based on a passion of ours, and then used aspects of sustainability to create a dynamic and colorful pattern for our carpet design. My passion for this project focused on fast fashion and the effects of it on our planet. With this issue, came a resolution from creativity and sustainability, and that resolution is thrifting & repurposing used clothing.
When thinking about the various ways I could go with the concept of my carpet design, I kept thinking back on the ability to take the beauty from something old and make it new again. The art of repurposing new textiles all begins in one place, and that is the stitch to make it all come together. I chose to select two different types of stitching that are commonly used in sewing; The Blanket Stitch and the Whip Stitch. I chose these both because they are vastly different from one another and each have a lot of potential for design.
My carpet collection is called The 70/30 Collection. This name is based off the color palette used in this collection, these colors are based on the typical colors found in ones wardrobe. It is said to be ideal to have your closet be 70% neutrals and 30% color, so I chose to create these patterns with large use of neutral colors with the smaller details using these bright, fashion forward colors.
